Long-Term Care in Saskatchewan:
its history and evolution
Until the coronavirus Covid 19 pandemic that emerged in 2020 in Canada and around the world, long-term care was an unknown service to most of us. It is something we don’t think about—until we need it. However, most of us will probably, at some time in our lives, encounter the need for long-term care for family members, friends or even ourselves. This book provides information on long-term care in the province—past and present in such facilities as nursing homes, special care homes, mental health institutions and personal care homes.
One of the findings of the book is that governments have generally lagged behind the needs of long term care and have failed to properly fund long term care providers. In many instances, there has been understaffing and minimum wages paid for hard and stressful work.
While the focus of the book is on the study of long term care in Saskatchewan, the findings may also be applicable to others parts of Canada. In particular is the evolution of less institutional care to more care in home-like settings wherever possible.
